

It is the first game in the Donkey Kong Country series that features a hidden world called Lost World. It is the sequel/follow-up to Donkey Kong Country and the prequel to Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! Plans were made for shipment to the Virtual Boy, but were cancelled due to the system's failure.

It was made available on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online for the Nintendo Switch on September 23, 2020. Donkey Kong Country 2 was ported exclusively over to the New Nintendo 3DS's Virtual Console in March/April 2016. Around the same time, the games were released on the Wii U's Virtual Console in Europe and Australia, in Japan in November 2014, and in the United States and Canada in February 2015. Donkey Kong Country 2 was later also released on the Game Boy Advance in 2004 and was until recently available for download on the Wiis Virtual Console, having become one of the most popular games of its age. This game, along with the other two original Donkey Kong Country games, were delisted on the Wii's Virtual Console worldwide except in South Korea, on November 25, 2012, for reasons unknown, but the games were relisted only in Europe and Australia on October 30, 2014. Donkey Kong Country 2 is a sequel to the original Donkey Kong Country (1994) which was later followed by Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kongs Double Trouble (1996).
